Make the Holidays Memorable

‘Tis the season...to decorate! Between the two of us moms, we have six kids ranging from a year and a half to thirteen, so Christmas magic is alive and well in our homes. And while we do love to decorate for the season, we must admit, some of our favourite seasonal styling tips keep things simple and warm, aligning to how we would style homes all year round, just with a Christmas twist. As always, we are so inspired by the Danish way of living well and since December is considered to be the most Hyggelig time of the year, we can’t help but bring some Hygge in too.

Bring the outdoors in. Both our families get real Christmas trees every year, but we get that’s not for everyone. You can integrate natural elements into your holiday decor through simple, fresh boughs, wreaths or beautiful table arrangements. We are also loving the trend of placing potted trees, big and small around the home in effortless planters like white ceramic or a basket. Check out what one client (and owner of Blossom, here in Calgary) has done in her own home to bring natural elements indoors (she does amazing outdoor planters as well).

Keep it monochromatic(ish). We aren’t saying pick one colour and stick with it, but we do love the idea of choosing a seasonal colour that compliments your existing style to keep things calm and cohesive. You can also think outside the box in terms of colour, so if red and green aren’t your thing, think about bringing in a metallic like gold or silver. Better yet, keep it neutral and bring in layers and textures with chunky cable-knits and faux fur to really up the cozy factor.

Place candles everywhere. Not only do candles bring in scents that can trigger warm memories (and add that fresh tree smell for those that miss it from a real tree), but the ambient glow that they give off is so relaxing. A few of our favourites for the season (not sponsored, just sharing our favs) are Illume Balsam & Cedar, Thymes Frasier Fir, and West Elm Cedarwood & Moss.

All of this being said, what really makes a home special during the holiday season are the traditions celebrated with the ones you love. One of our favourite family traditions is to go to the mountains to search for and chop down our family Christmas tree. Sure, we may end up with a Charlie Brown tree from time to time, but the smiles and memories made are well worth the effort...and pine needles everywhere! Another cherished tradition is a bit of a spin on the classic advent calendar (also known as the chocolate calendar to the youngest). In addition to the daily chocolate (Purdy’s, of course) countdown, there is a folded note including a Christmas themed family activity for the day. Activities ranging from small simple things like reading a favourite Christmas book or dancing to a Christmas tune to bigger events, like Zoo Lights.

Whatever your traditions (and recognizing that some may look a little different than usual this year), we hope that your holiday season is a peaceful, happy, and memorable one.
