Make Your Bedroom a Sanctuary

This time of year (and especially this past year), there is something extra to be said about a calming, cozy bedroom. A space that is really an escape to relax and recharge. Within a home, the bedroom is a space where there are far less design “rules” from a functional perspective; however still so important to ensure the bedroom is peaceful and practical. Here are some of our favourite elements to make a bedroom a sanctuary:

Ambient lighting. The bedroom is one of the few places in the home that you don’t need the same degree of task or direct lighting as other parts of the house. It’s a great space to select beautiful fixtures that diffuse light and perhaps bring you a little joy too.

Neutral and consistent colour palette. Let the eyes relax by taking in neutral tones and skip the pops of bright colour that make the eyes stop to take notice (but if you are a bright colour lover, stick to just one). There are many ways to create visual interest in a way that is soothing, rather than surprising. From layers of textiles on the bed to wall and window coverings that soften.

Variety of textures. Adding layers and textures is one of the best ways to bring dimension and warmth to a bedroom. When selecting textiles and other items for your bedroom, think about how they will feel to the touch. There are of course so many options and preferences when it comes to bed linens, but this is an area where we like to splurge a little and add a touch of luxury. And whether you are a minimalist when it comes to throw pillows or can never have enough, make sure they add to the space and encourage relaxation.

Wood and other natural elements. Wood adds warmth to any space, as it is simple, natural, and makes us feel closer to nature. Plants are another great way to bring the outdoors in and have many other benefits beyond being a go-to design element. And if you still aren’t feeling cozy enough will your layers of bed linens, throw, and throw pillows, toss a couple sheepskins or a natural fiber area rug (like wool or jute) into the space.

Candles and books. In our opinion (and that of hygge enthusiasts) no bedroom is complete without the simple pleasure of candles and books. Oh, and if you have a space for a nook in a bedroom (especially in a child’s room) to curl up with pillows and books, even better!
