All Books Are Welcome

There are many theories out there on what to do with books and how to store them in your home (or not). The extreme minimalists would say if you’ve read it or it doesn’t serve a functional purpose, it’s gone. The not so far off KonMari Method would have us categorize the books and only keep those that “spark joy” - gives you a thrill of pleasure when you touch it. Clea and Joanna of The Home Edit would never suggest purging books, other than to pass along to others, but of course will be arranged together in a beautiful rainbow.

Around here, at This Is Home we appreciate parts of all of the above, but especially applaud the Hygge perspective on books. All books are welcome and displaying books around your home creates warmth and opportunities for connection.  Whether you have book-filled walls or just a few favourites, we love that books are incredibly versatile design elements.  They can add colour or just neutral texture and are great for adding height and depth to styled spaces. In fact, we can’t really think of a room in the house that couldn’t use a book here or there. From eye catching coffee table books or styled shelving in the main living space to a couple well placed in progress or beloved classics on the night side table. And of course, our very favourite space to incorporate books into the home is a cozy nook for little hands to easily access and cuddle up to read (especially if it’s with us moms).
